Fresh Prince of Bel-Air star Alfonso Ribeiro is suing the makers of video game Fortnite for allegedly ripping off his “Carlton Dance”.
The American actor, 47, says his distinctive dance has been unfairly copied by the game’s makers.
Ribeiro played Carlton Banks in the 90s sitcom, which also starred Will Smith.
Fortnite, a survival multiplayer game, has become a global phenomenon since its release in September 2017 and now has 200 million registered players.
Footballers including England star Dele Alli and French World Cup winner Antoine Griezmann have copied the game’s dance moves on the pitch.
According to legal papers obtained by celebrity site TMZ, Ribeiro, who appeared as a guest judge during this year’s Strictly Come Dancing and was on I’m A Celebrity in 2013, alleged Fortnite creator Epic Games Interactive used the dance without his permission.
According to the writ, Ribeiro is in the process of copyrighting the dances. He is seeking damages from the company.
He is also suing the creator of basketball game 2K, Take-Two, for a similar alleged offence.
The legal papers, lodged at the US District Court in Central California, say the companies unfairly profited from Ribeiro’s “creative expression, likeness and celebrity”.
Ribeiro first performed the dance on the show in 1991, and also incorporated it into a performance on US Strictly Come Dancing equivalent Dancing With The Stars.
It comes just weeks after rapper 2 Milly sued Epic for allegedly duping his “Milly Rock” dance.
Epic Games and Take Two have been approached for comment.
