Carlow GAA club suspends activities due to local coronavirus cases

Rathvilly GAA has become the latest club to shut down as a safety precaution amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The Carlow club released a brief statement this afternoon outlining the reasons for their temporary suspension of activities.

The statement read: "Due to confirmed cases of Covid-19 in the Rathvilly area and after careful consideration and advice the executive have decided to halt all club activities until further notice.

"The decision was not taken lightly but the health of our members and the wider community is paramount. Thank you and stay safe."

The recent surge in coronavirus cases has disrupted sporting activities across the country, particularly in the Midlands.

Contact sports are suspended in Kildare, Laois and Offaly after the Government announced a two-week lockdown in the three counties.

The GAA, LGFA and Camogie Association released a joint statement announcing 'a cessation of all activity in these counties at all levels and in all codes until further notice'.

Despite the fact that the Government restrictions allow for non-contact outdoor sports and training in groups of 15 over the next two weeks, the statement added: “This suspension on activities covers all collective training, matches, in-person meetings and camps.

“GAA grounds and facilities in the affected counties should remain closed until further notice.”
