Carlos Cuellar pays final Rangers tribute as he announces retirement from football

Carlos Cuellar has announced he'll be moving into coaching, paying a final tribute to Rangers after hanging up his boots.

The Spanish centre-back played for Maccabi Petah Tikva in Israel last season, but they were relegated at the end of the campaign and Cuellar opted not to play on.

He spent one season at Ibrox in 2007-08, helping Walter Smith's side to a domestic cup double and being named Player of the Year.

The defender was also part of the team which reached the UEFA Cup final in that same year.

On Thursday, Cuellar confirmed that he's keen to get into coaching.

He said: "I'm going to pass the Coach training exam, learn as much as possible and enjoy football from another perspective

"I want to transmit everything I've learned from great coaches and make those things real by applying them on the pitch.

"I want to thank all of you who have been there from the first to the last day, and tell you that without you all this would not have been possible.

"Not just people I have met in this profession, but also friends that I have made outside football who have helped me in difficult times, in other countries and cities, to make me feel better and at home.

"Thank you all, without you this would not have been possible: thank you for these 18 years of my professional career."

To commemorate his retirement the defender has been gifted a special shirt made up of the colours of some of the teams he played for - with the Rangers crest on the left hand side over the heart.

Designed by the prestigious Dutch studio Wesseling, Carlos' friends and family - including his longtime agent, Pedro Bravo - handed him the shirt in Tetuán, the Madrid neighbourhood where he grew up and began to dream of being a footballer.
