Carlos Corberan set to remain with Leeds United as Cultural Leonesa look elsewhere

Leeds United under-23 head coach Carlos Corberan has handed Leeds United a major boost by pledging his future to the club, according to Spanish outlet Radio Leon.

Reports in Spain emerged on Sunday linking the highly-popular coach with a move back to his native country to take charge of third-tier side Cultural Leonesa.

However, the latest reports from Spain are suggesting Corberan has turned down that interest, in a bid to support Marcelo Bielsa’s promotion push with the Whites.

LeedsLive understands Jose Manuel Aira will return to Cultural Leonesa for a second stint, having left the club at the end of the season, allowing Corberan to continue his role at Leeds.

The first-team coach has proven to be a hit at Elland Road, alongside Bielsa, leading his side to the Premier League Professional Development League title last season.

Corberan is a highly regarded member of the Argentine chief’s backroom staff and also played a huge role in the club’s push for promotion from the Championship, often visible on the touchline at Elland Road.

Rumours of his departure were met with an outcry to stay from Whites supporters and while this news may not prove as popular as Bielsa’s contract extension, it should still lift the spirits of many around West Yorkshire.

There has been a lot of speculation suggesting Corberan is the heir to Bielsa’s throne, with many accepting the former Athletic Bilbao boss won’t be around forever.

Yet, who better to take on the mantle than a man who has worked under the wing of Bielsa and has encountered first-hand experience of his methods and philosophy.

The work he has done with the youth set-up at Thorp Arch has been a tremendous success, allowing the likes of Jack Clarke and Jamie Shackleton to establish themselves as first-team regulars in the Championship.

With another batch of talented youngsters hoping to break through at Thorp Arch, it’s clear they will once again be in safe hands with Corberan
