Carlos Alcaraz makes US Open decision amid new injury update

Carlos Alcaraz is set to return to tennis at the US Open after a four-month injury absence.

The Spaniard has struggled with a persistent wrist injury in his right arm, which he has just not been able to shrug off.

The 23-year-old is the reigning champion at Flushing Meadows and looks set to mount a title defence in Queen’s, New York City later this month.

He has been forced to withdraw from both the French Open and Wimbledon, where he was looking to retain his Roland-Garros crown and win back the All England Club title which he lost to Jannik Sinner in 2025.

The Italian successfully defended the trophy earlier this summer against Alexander Zverev in the final.

Alcaraz has not played on the tour since April 14, where he pulled out of the Barcelona Open.

However the seven-time Grand Slam champion will return for the year’s final major, and he joined forces with football transfer guru Fabrizio Romano to announce his comeback.

Taking to social media, the Spaniard coined the Italian journalist’s trademark ‘here we go’.

Alcaraz’s comeback could well mean that he is in contention to feature in the star-studded mixed doubles tournament, which takes place next week.

He played last year, in the first tournament of its kind as the biggest names across the men’s and women’s singles tours took part in a revamped event that was moved to ‘Fan Week’, which is the week before the main draws begin.

It was a controversial move, but it saw Flushing Meadows record all-time best viewing numbers across the three-week span.

Alcaraz partnered 2021 women’s champion Emma Raducanu, but the Briton is unlikely to play in New York this year after suffering a stress fracture in her right shin, which meant that she could not play at Wimbledon earlier this year.

The Spaniard had been set to return at the Cincinnati Open, where he was looking to defend his title, but a minor setback stopped that from happening.

Instead, the now-world No3 will make his comeback on the biggest stage of all. having successfully completed a training camp back home in Murcia, Spain alongside fellow player Holger Rune, who has dropped to world No102 after he ruptured his Achilles back in October.
