Carlos Alcaraz gives worrying update on his wrist injury

  • Carlos Alcaraz has withdrawn from the Madrid Open due to a right wrist injury, marking his second consecutive year missing his home tournament.
  • The Spanish tennis player also pulled out of the Barcelona Open this week for the same injury, which he described as “more serious than any of us expected”.
  • Alcaraz lost his world No 1 ranking to Jannik Sinner after his defeat in the Monte Carlo Masters final last weekend.
  • He plans to make his return at the Italian Open in Rome next month, where he is the defending champion.
  • Separately, Novak Djokovic also confirmed his withdrawal from the Madrid Open, making it his third consecutive Masters event missed.
