Carlo Ancelotti’s wife has confirmed the Italian will take a break from coaching to “recharge his batteries” after being dismissed by Real Madrid.

The 55-year-old left the Spanish club last week after two seasons in charge. Ancelotti has since been linked with the managerial positions at Manchester City, West Ham and Milan but has already indicated he will take some time off this summer to have back surgery.

Now, in an interview with the Spanish edition of Vanity Fair, his wife, Mariann, has said she believes he will take his time before returning to football but revealed they will remain in Spain for the foreseeable future.

“If Real had wanted, Carlo would have continued. But it did not happen and Carlo wants to ‘recharge his batteries’ here before making a decision about which club will be his next,” she said.

“We wanted to take advantage of the possibility to know places in Spain we have not been able to visit up to now. Also museums, restaurants etc. Additionally, the people of Madrid are incredible. They have supported us a lot and they have transmitted their respect to us and the enormous appreciation that they have for Carlo. We are very grateful to the people for their affection and loyalty.”

Reports in Italy have claimed that Ancelotti has met Milan’s vice-president, Adriano Galliani, on several occasions this week, as the Serie A strugglers attempt to persuade him to return to San Siro.

“He hasn’t said yes to me, but neither has he said no,” Galliani said on Wednesday. “He doesn’t have doubts about Milan, he’s simply weighing up whether to step out for a year. We’re trying, but nothing is sure yet.”
