Carlo Ancelotti sticks with Everton goalkeeper decision and explains Jordan Pickford reaction to Olsen start

Carlo Ancelotti has opened up on Jordan Pickford's reaction to being left out of the Everton side for the loss to Newcastle this weekend.

The England No. 1 was on the bench in the Premier League for the first time since joining the Blues in the summer of 2017, with Robin Olsen starting in goal.

The Sweden international was making his debut for the club following a loan move from Roma in the closing stages of deadline day.

His manager praised the performance of the 30-year-old and reiterated that Pickford would be back in goal for the visit of Manchester United to Goodison Park next week.

Ancelotti told his post-match press conference: “The performance of Olsen was good, like usual.

“He's a good goalkeeper, he's a goalkeeper with experience. He was in good control of the game.

“The reaction of Jordan was the reaction of a player who understands he was not going to play today, because I explained to him really clearly that I wanted to give an opportunity for Robin to play.

“He [Pickford] will be back for the Manchester United game.”

Following a strong performance from Olsen, the boss was then asked if it becomes complicated to potentially drop the goalkeeper again for next week's game.

However, rotating players in that position is something Ancelotti is used to, and he doesn't believe it is a complicated decision.

“No, absolutely not. It's not complicated for me,” he added.

“In my career I'm used to rotating the goalkeepers. It happened in Real Madrid, in Napoli.

“There is a possibility to rotate them. It will not be the last time.

“He can play in the Premier League, in the cup, he's a goalkeeper that everyone one of us has trust in.

“It doesn't mean that you don't have trust in Jordan, we have a lot of trust in Jordan. No doubt for this.”
