Carlo Ancelotti sets Robin Olsen challenge alongside Jordan Pickford at Everton

Carlo Ancelotti has told new signing Robin Olsen he can oust Jordan Pickford as Everton's No1.

But the Blues boss says the on loan goalkeeper has to prove he can take the place of Pickford, who has played every league game since he joined the club, by what he does in training at Finch Farm.

Olsen joined the club on the final day of the international window earlier this month on a season-long loan deal from AS Roma.

Everton do not have the option to buy the 30-year-old Swedish international but Ancelotti says a short-term stay is no barrier to Olsen being picked ahead of Pickford.

The England stopper endured a roller coaster afternoon against Liverpool, surviving calls to be sent off after a rash challenge on Virgil van Dijk, producing some sublime saves but also breathing a sigh of relief when Jordan Henderson's shot, which he failed to stop, was ruled out for offside.

“Robin is a good goalkeeper and we signed him because I think he can help the squad to be better,” Ancelotti said.

“All players in the squad are there to compete and play and this is his role; to compete in training, work hard with a good spirit and attitude and then I will decide the line-up.”

Olsen was named on the bench ahead of Jonas Lossl for Saturday's Merseyside derby.
