Carlo Ancelotti sets Everton players homework after goal they knew nothing about

Carlo Ancelotti has joked it is "unbelievable" that most of the Everton squad don't know about his playing career.

And the Blues boss says he has instructed his players to go away and "study football".

This week marked 32 years since Ancelotti scored the opening goal in AC Milan's 5-0 European Cup semi-final thrashing of Real Madrid at the San Siro.

A star-studded AC side would go on to win the 1989 tournament and Ancelotti was thrilled to be reminded of that semi-final night, at his press conference yesterday.

But Ancelotti says the Everton squad will have no idea about the game as they have little knowledge about his playing days.

“It was an unbelievable emotion, it was a fantastic goal!" he said.

"I played as a winger in that game and it was a fantastic game. I have a fantastic memory of beating Real Madrid 5-0 in the semi-final of the Champions League. It was absolutely unbelievable."

Asked if the Everton squad would know of the game, he said: “The Everton players? Most of them know I was a player but they don’t know anything about my style of football. They don’t know - it is unbelievable!

"I said to them a lot of times you have to study football, because I was a good player, I was not top, but I was a really good midfielder and you don’t know!"

Although Ancelotti initially described the goal as "fantastic" he would go on to accept it came via a mistake from Real goalkeeper Francisco Buyo.

The pair were reunited when Ancelotti became Real Madrid boss.

“I was used to scoring outside the box, in my career I scored only two goals inside the box," he recalled.

"Usually it was outside the box. It was a little mistake by the goalkeeper, Buyol, and I met him in Madrid when I was manager, and paid for that goal with a dinner for him!

"It was not a fantastic goal, but a really important goal.”
