Carlo Ancelotti was sensationally sent off following Everton's 1-1 draw with Manchester United after angrily disputing the decision to deny the Toffees a late winner at Goodison Park.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin thought he had won the game in injury time as his shot hit Harry Maguire and deflected into the corner of David de Gea's net, but following a VAR review, referee Chris Kavanagh ruled out the effort as Gylfi Sigurdsson was lying on the pitch in front of De Gea.
The final whistle was not to be the end of the drama, however, as Ancelotti was shown a red card after charging on to the field to confront Kavanagh in protest – with a touchline ban potentially set to follow.
The draw was an unwanted result for two sides with European aspirations as United fail to capitalise on Chelsea’s dropped points at Bournemouth.
Meanwhile, Everton missed a chance to leapfrog both Arsenal and Burnley and remain in the bottom half of the table.
With just eight points separating Arsenal (10th) and Chelsea (fourth), twists in race for the European spots look set to continue until the league’s conclusion.
