Carlo Ancelotti right about Dominic Calvert-Lewin as Everton striker delivers response

An Everton hat trick has been an all-too-rare occurrence over the last few years.

In fact, before Saturday afternoon's visit of West Bromwich Albion to Goodison Park, the last player to bag three goals in the same game for the Blues was Wayne Rooney in a 4-0 win over West Ham United.

Finally that run has been brought to an end, and Carlo Ancelotti will no doubt be delighted with the player who has managed to do it.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin's trio of strikes might not go down as the best he has scored in his career, but they all perfectly show the instructions his manager has given him since December.

Back in January the manager said: “He [Calvert-Lewin] works hard, really hard, he has to be focussed more on not moving too much outside [into wide positions].

“He has to stay close to the box because there he is really dangerous."

It's clear from the first two games of the season that the striker has fully taken that advice on board, but it came to the fore much more against West Brom on Saturday.

Calvert-Lewin had a couple of chances to give Everton the lead before he eventually did, in particular heading a fantastic James Rodriguez cross just wide.

But the theme throughout the half was that the striker was always central, more often than not in space, and desperate to find the back of the net.

He got his reward later in the first period to react quickly to a loose ball in the penalty area, flicking the ball home and finally being awarded the strike thanks to a lengthy VAR check.

The second half came and again he was in the right place at the right time, getting onto the end of Richarlison's driven ball across the face of the goal to get the final touch.

To cap off his fantastic afternoon, a few minutes later, another great corner was delivered into the West Brom area for Calvert-Lewin to get himself on the end of and bag Everton's first hat trick in almost three years.

This represents a huge switch for 23-year-old.

No longer is he the man who will work hard and give his all for the team but not get himself on the scoresheet.

That dedication and commitment is all still there, that's not going to go away any time soon.

He's still a nightmare for defenders to deal with, with his pace and strength combining to make a formidable opponent for any Premier League centre-back.

But now he seems solely focused on getting the ball in the back of the net. He's staying central, just as the manager wanted, and is starting to reap the rewards for that.

These goals might not get into any YouTube compilations but they are exactly what Ancelotti wants to see, a ruthless striker getting himself into dangerous areas on a consistent basis.

Four goals in two matches is an incredible return to start the season for Calvert-Lewin, yet again answering a fair amount of questions surrounding his performances,.

He didn't score post-lockdown in 2019/20, had his good run of form come to an end?
Emphatically, the answer has proven to be no.

Ancelotti has the striker he's wanted. Everton look to have a fantastic No.9. And he's still only 23.

Fingers crossed this will be the first hat trick of many for Calvert-Lewin in royal blue.
