Carlo Ancelotti responds to criticism over his handling of Yerry Mina at Everton

Caro Ancelotti has rubbished claims he shattered Yerry Mina's confidence by dropping him for the game with Manchester United - and that it was the reason for his miserable display for Colombia.

Mina was sent off for his country in their World Cup qualifying defeat against Uruguay in which he was also at fault for the first goal.

Colombian media savaged the team's performance with Mina heavily criticised but some of the blame was put at the door of Ancelotti.

A piece in Marca said his decision to drop Mina for the visit of United, before the international break, led to the defender to "collapse mentally".

The Everton manager laughed off the suggestion and says he has no concerns about the 26-year-old's strength of character.

“No, I don't think he was affected by this," Ancelotti said.

"It was not a good game. The character of Yerry is strong, he is a strong character.

"Unfortunately sometimes he makes mistakes, as all of the players do. But he is still confident and has no problem to play.”

Mina was named on the bench for the visit of United with Mason Holgate, playing his first game of the season after injury, preferred alongside Michael Keane.
