Carlo Ancelotti proves pundits wrong to give Everton fans what they always wanted

The mood around Everton is particularly high right now.

Carlo Ancelotti has led the Blues to four successive wins in all competitions to begin the 2020/21 season, with all coming in pretty convincing fashion.

The fourth round of the League Cup beckons next week and Everton are one of five sides with maximum points in the Premier League, in second at the time of writing, just behind Leicester City on goal difference.

Not only that, but the Blues are currently the second top scorers in the division after two matches with six goals, level with Liverpool and against just behind Leicester City and Leeds United.

Add eight goals in the Carabao Cup on top of that and you can see exactly why it's been an exciting time to be an Evertonian over the course of the last few weeks.

It's already a far cry from the position the club was in less than three years ago.

When Sam Allardyce was in charge at Goodison Park, many supporters bemoaned the style of play despite a number of pundits asking what more Everton fans wanted.

Garth Crooks, for example, said: "Sam Allardyce has come in, steadied the ship, got them winning football matches, going up the league and Everton fans have got the gall, the brass neck to complain?"

Yes, they did. And, as it turns out, they knew what they were talking about.

In Sam Allardyce's first nine games in charge of Everton, the Blues managed to muster 65 shots on goal according to stats provided by the BBC.

To put that into context, in the four matches they have played at the start of 2020/21, Ancelotti's squad have had 85 attempts at goal.

27 of those shots have been on target compared to just 21 from the selection of Allardyce matches assessed. Everton's figure of 14 goals is six higher from their former manager's nine-match spell.

Back in January 2018, the Blues managed to have no shots on target in either of their two Premier League matches to kick off the new year, at home to Manchester united and away to Tottenham Hotspur.

Now the situation the club finds itself in is completely different of course, and that shows the evolution already in place at Goodison Park.

No longer do the Blues look like a defensive and negative side that still shipped goals anyway.

Suddenly Everton look like a vibrant attacking force whichever players they have on the pitch, and that is testament both to Ancelotti and his squad of players.

The new signings have played a huge part of course, but everyone else has raised their game at the beginning of this term to match the levels of those arriving at Goodison Park.

In the likes of Richarlison, James Rodriguez, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Lucas Digne and so many more across the squad - Everton have the ability to cause any side in the division a defensive headache.

The Blues have just scored five goals in consecutive matches, a feat which they didn't manage once throughout the whole of last season.

It's only when you compare the numbers the side are currently producing to ones from under three years ago that you get a full sense of how far they have come.

There is still some way to go of course, but fans are undoubtedly delighted to be watching Everton cause a real threat to opponents once more.

What more did Everton fans want? Well this, for a start.

And it's hopefully just the beginning.
