Carlo Ancelotti pinpoints what Jamie Carragher did as Liverpool 'stole' Champions League

Carlo Ancelotti has reflected on Jamie Carragher's 'time-wasting' in extra-time of the 2005 Champions League final as the Italian's AC Milan side squandered a 3-0 lead against Liverpool .

Ancelotti believes the Reds 'stole' the trophy as three second-half goals overturned a 3-0 half-time deficit before Rafa Benitez's side prevailed in a penalty shootout.

Despite their comeback, Liverpool were second-best in the extra period as shootout hero Jerzy Dudek made an unbelievable save to deny Andriy Shevchenko.

And - reminiscing on the game - Ancelotti recalled Carragher buying time for his fatigued teammates.

“I remember you using the time up in extra-time going down for treatment twice,” he told Carragher in an interview with the Telegraph.

“I managed in the Champions League final in 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2014 and the best we played was 2005 and we lost. This is football.”

Ancelotti and Milan would gain revenge on Liverpool by beating them in the 2007 final, his second European triumph after the Rossoneri's win over Juventus at Old Trafford in 2003.

The current Everton boss led Real Madrid to European glory in 2014, defeating city rivals Atletico Madrid in Lisbon to achieve the fabled La Decima for Los Blancos.

But Ancelotti's focus is now very much on Goodison Park - and taking the Toffees to Europe's top table for the first time since they lost in a Champions League qualifier against Villarreal in 2005.

“Next season we have to qualify for the Champions League,” he said. “I am here for this.”
