Carlo Ancelotti on Real Madrid injury 'doubts' as Karim Benzema update shared before Liverpool

Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti has admitted he has “doubts” about the fitness of one of his players with the clash against Liverpool looming.

The Reds are due to face Madrid in the last-16 of the Champions League, with the first leg taking place at Anfield on February 21. Liverpool will then travel to the Spanish capital for the return leg on March 15 at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Liverpool are dealing with several injuries themselves at the moment. Jurgen Klopp is currently unable to call on Ibrahima Konate, Virgil van Dijk Luis Diaz, Arthur Melo, Roberto Firmino and Diogo Jota, although there is hope that some are nearing a return to training.

For Madrid, they are currently without Karim Benzema, Thibaut Courtois, Eder Militao, Ferland Mendy and Lucas Vazquez, with the latter two already ruled out for the match with Liverpool. The La Liga giants were in Club World Cup semi-final action on Wednesday night, as they beat Al Ahly 4-1 in Morocco.

Ancelotti was asked about his injury situation ahead of the final on Saturday. The Real Madrid boss did not speak about Courtois, but did provide an update on Benzema and Militao.

“They are not fully recovered,” said Ancelotti. “Karim is quite good and with Militão I have more doubts.

“They will train before the game and we will make decisions there.

“(Dani) Carvajal returns, who had a fever today and (Marco) Asensio, who has a small overload from the Mallorca game”.
