Carlo Ancelotti makes Richarlison admission as Marco Silva's big Everton dilemma remains

Carlo Ancelotti will continue to utilise Richarlison as both a striker and winger as he says the days of “specialists” are over.

The Everton boss started the Brazilian forward in a wide left position against Newcastle United on Saturday before moving the 22-year-old upfront during the second-half.

Richarlison has previously said he feels his best position is upfront but former Blues boss Marco Silva felt he was more effective on the flank.

Ancelotti, who has two wins from two as Everton manager, is minded to keep switching Richarlison's position depending on the match as he paid tribute to the “powerful” young forward who laid on the assist for Everton's second goal at St James' Park.

“When he plays as a striker he doesn't have to work a lot defensively,” Ancelotti said.

“When he plays on the left – as he did today [Saturday] – with the ball it doesn't change a lot but without the play he has to work more. If I put him as a winger, it has to be play more defensively. He is not so used to that position but he can do it because he is a powerful player.

Richarlison: His season so far

"You see what he did for the second goal [Ancelotti blows out cheeks] it was a really powerful sprint which made the second goal. And so he can play in both positions and finished is the time where there are specialists, a player has to be complete. The defender has to be able to defend but play the ball as well, midfielders are the same and the time where one player is only a defender or only a midfielder, is finished.”
