Carlo Ancelotti insists Lucas Digne's "joke" red card down to Merseyside derby fallout

Carlo Ancelotti claimed Lucas Digne's “joke” red card at Southampton was an over-reaction to the stormy Merseyside derby last week.

The France full-back was dismissed for a second-half lunge on Kyle Walker-Peters as Everton's unbeaten start to the season came to an abrupt halt.

Jordan Pickford escaped punishment for a season-ending tackle on Virgil van Dijk against Liverpool while Richarlison was sent off.

And Ancelotti claimed: “The red card was a joke, it was not intentional, for sure it was not violent. It was not a bad challenge. Maybe it was a yellow. He was running behind and he had contact with the ankle of the opponent.

“He did not have intention to hurt the player or use violent conduct. It was not the right decision.

“Maybe all this talk all week against Pickford, against Richarlison, affected the decision and if so it's not right, it's not fair. We will appeal, for sure.”

Asked if he was concerned if he was concerned about player discipline, the Italian said: “No, I don't think so. For the fact that this red card that we have to lose Digne for three games.

"We are worried for this season. We didn't complain about Richarlison. He got the red card and is out for three games but today was too much.”

Everton remain top on goal difference from Liverpool.

“I am disappointed that we lost the game but I cannot forget what we did till now,” Ancelotti added.

“We are till top of the table which is an unbelievable achievement for us. We have to keep going.”

Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl said: “He tried before to kick him and then he hit him from behind so more me it was a clear red card.”
