Carlo Ancelotti explains why curious Bernard pattern has developed at Everton

Carlo Ancelotti has explained his thinking behind a curious quirk involving Bernard since he took over at Everton.

The Italian took the reins at Goodison Park towards the end of December following the sacking of Marco Silva earlier that month, with Duncan Ferguson taking temporary charge until his arrival.

And the Blues have seen a significant upturn in form from that point which has seen them push right back in the hunt for potential European football next season.

However, some have noticed an interesting trend in the way Bernard has been used by Ancelotti .

The 27-year-old has started five matches under his new manager, but only one of those has come away from home.

The Brazilian begun the 1-1 draw at West Ham in January but was taken off at half time.

He has been showing good form at Goodison, however, most notably scoring a great goal against Crystal Palace last month.

And the boss has explained the thinking behind his decision, while making clear he is a big fan of the winger.

Ancelotti said: "I know really well all of the players, I know their qualities and also their defects.

"Maybe, for the fact, that at Goodison we have more possibility to control the ball, he is really good with the ball and he did really well against Crystal Palace where he scored the first goal.

"When the game is in balance, it is more difficult for him to prove his quality. When we have control of the game, for him it is easier for him to prove his quality. Maybe for this reason, I put him [in the team] at home and not away.

"He doesn't have to convince me, I am already convinced he is a good player and helpful for us."

Bernard was named on the bench for Everton's 1-1 draw with Manchester United at Goodison last weekend, but was introduced for the last half an hour of that game.

The Blues travel to Chelsea on Sunday before facing Liverpool at home a week later.
