Carlo Ancelotti elaborates on Richarlison role but hasn't changed his mind after Everton switch

Carlo Ancelotti has not changed his mind regarding Richarlison’s role at Everton despite the Brazilian’s recent scoring run.

The 23-year-old has stepped up in recent weeks as Dominic Calvert-Lewin struggles with injury, scoring five goals from his last five games in all competitions.

Having been used as a striker alongside the England international last season following Ancelotti ’s arrival at Goodison, Richarlison has been predominantly utilised outwide this season following the summer arrival of James Rodriguez.

The Everton boss switched systems to a midfield diamond in the absence of his Colombian playmaker against Southampton, with the forward scoring the winner following his change of position.

But having admitted Richarlison prefers to play upfront before the game, Ancelotti insisted the Brazilian’s role was virtually unchanged against the Saints as he explained his thinking behind his use of the 23-year-old.

“His position has changed a little bit but not much against Southampton,” he said. “We played with a diamond in midfield against Southampton.

“We moved Dominic to the right a little and Richarlison, as usual, played centre-left.

“He is less involved defensively in that position so he can use more of his ability and quality forward.”
