Carlo Ancelotti dismisses 'hero' claim and as he focuses Everton for 'complicated' return

Carlo Ancelotti has dismissed talk of him having 'hero' status at Everton having overseen a first win at Anfield in over 20 years.

And now that the dust has settled on the Blues' 2-0 win, the Italian was quick to turn the players' attention to the visit of Southampton a week today.

Because while Ancelotti said Everton had little trouble in being "focused" on facing Liverpool he admits it will be more "complicated" against the Saints, at Goodison where the Blues have stuttered of late.

"We tried to calm down the players," Ancelotti said.

"I think they feel that they have a lot of pressure for this game. A derby is a derby and Everton did not win for a long time. We calmed down. We gave to the players confidence and belief that we could do this. And we did."

But the Everton manager added: "I’m not a hero."

Straight after the 2-0 win, Ancelotti hailed the Blues' away form but reminded his players that at home, their form has not been good enough.

"We are working to compete with Liverpool," he said.

"I think that also, even if we won tonight, we are not at the same level. I think we are in the right way to be where Liverpool is now – one of the top teams in Europe. It is special.

"I think to be focused in a derby is not complicated. The next step is to be focused like we are tonight in the next game. That will be more complicated."

He continued: "Our target is not [beating] Liverpool.

"Our target is to reach the European positions and be playing European football next season. This is the achievement. I can understand the happiness. We are really happy tonight. Evertonians are really happy tonight. They deserve to be after 21 years!

"We have to achieve something. I think this is a good moment for us but, as I said, this is only three points."
