Carlo Ancelotti declares Liverpool "can be controlled" after Napoli's Anfield draw

Carlo Ancelotti has sent an encouraging title race message to Manchester City : " Liverpool can be controlled."

The Napoli boss saw his side draw at Anfield on Wednesday night - meaning the Serie A outfit have taken four points from a possible six against the European champions in the group stage.

Dries Mertens fired them into a first-half lead with a spectacular finish from a narrow angle, but Dejan Lovren's header after the break ensured the Reds earned a share of the spoils.

It means Group E will go down to the last day with Liverpool, Napoli and Red Bull Salzburg battling for two spots in the knockout stages in the new year.

Liverpool currently have a eight-point buffer at the top of the Premier League after just 13 games and sit nine clear of City in third.

But Ancelotti believes there are weaknesses to the Reds' game.

"It’s not easy to get a draw here," he told Sky Italia. "We suffered under pressure and began to defend too deep, but there’s no other way to emerge alive from Anfield. We emerged alive and that’s the important thing.

“It was a good evening, we got a point and remain in the running for both qualification and the top spot in the group.

“We changed the players, but not the basic structure of the team. Di Lorenzo played wide on the left when we had the ball, then got back to help the midfield in a 4-4-2 when defending.

“Liverpool have enormous quality, but they become more controllable when they are forced to play within reduced spaces.”
