Carlo Ancelotti criticises referee Lee Mason after Everton's draw with Southampton

Carlo Ancelotti has criticised the performance of referee Lee Mason in Everton's 1-1 draw with Southampton.

The Blues boss said the official's display was like his team's - "not so good".

Ancelotti didn't go into the specifics of why he thought Mason was poor but Richarlison came in for heavy treatment while the Blues had two penalty claims dismissed - and a contentious one given against them.

The Everton manager was asked about the decision not to send off Saints' defender Jan Bednarek after he brought Richarlison down when he was heading through on goal.

Mason awarded a free-kick and booked the Southampton man.  A VAR review also decided that it was not a red card offence but Ancelotti had yet to see replays and was not prepared to comment on that particular incident.

But he was happy to share his opinion on the referee's overall display.

"I don't know," he said of the Richarlison incident.

"I don't want to judge the single episode.

"The performance of the referee was like my team - not so good.

"I think some decisions....in my personal view in the game, his performance was not at the top.

"But I honestly didn't see the highlights {of the foul on Richarlison] so I can't judge."

Ancelotti, meanwhile, has confirmed Andre Gomes sustained a knock to his ankle and will be assessed ahead of Sunday's trip to Wolves.
