Carlo Ancelotti confirms Ben Godfrey role for Everton's trip to Southampton

Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed that Ben Godfrey will line up at right back for Everton this weekend against Southampton.

The summer signing was handed his Blues debut in Saturday's 2-2 draw with Liverpool at Goodison Park, replacing Seamus Coleman in the first half after the club captain suffered an injury.

Predominantly a central defender, the arrival from Norwich filled in well on the right hand side for the remainder of the game to help his side to a point.

Ancelotti agreed that Godfrey played well against Jurgen Klopp's side, and admitted the 22-year-old would play at right back this weekend in the absence of both Coleman and Jonjoe Kenny through injury.

The boss told his pre-match press conference: "I think Ben played a good game. It was not his usual position, but after the first 15 minutes in the first half where he had difficulty, the second half was really better.

"We have to consider that he played against one of the best wingers in the world in Sadio Mane! It was not an easy game for him.

"But it was good in my opinion. We've tried him this week in some exercises as a right back.

"He has, of course, all the qualities to play like a right back. I have no doubt for this.

"Yes, he's going to play right back [on Sunday]."

Everton will be looking for their fifth straight victory away from home in all competitions when they make the trip to face Southampton this weekend.

And Ancelotti believes the upturn in form is partly down to improvements in his side, but also admitted it is easier for travelling teams without supporters in attendance.

"In general, away games are in my opinion easier because you don't have the crowd. To win away now is a little bit easier than in the past," he added.

"But I think that apart from this the squad has more ambition, motivation - and it's this ambition and motivation that gave us, in the last few games, the opportunity to win away."
