Carlo Ancelotti backs Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford before Liverpool

Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed that Jordan Pickford will be fully focused on the game when Everton meet Liverpool on Saturday evening.

The Blues goalkeeper was involved in the incident which saw an injury to Virgil van Dijk that has seemingly ruled the centre-back out for the rest of the 2020/21 campaign.

Police later confirmed that they were investigating abuse sent to the England No.1 and to Everton forward Richarlison following October's meeting between the sides.

However, Ancelotti does not believe the incident will be playing on the mind of Pickford at all this weekend.

The boss told his pre-match press conference: "I don't think so. He's focused to prepare for the game.

"Of course he was not happy when this injury happened, but I think that now he's focused on the game and only on the game."

Pickford's form has come under some scrutiny over recent weeks and months, with Robin Olsen getting multiple opportunities over that time to stake his claim for a place in the side.

Liverpool's starting goalkeeper Alisson has made high-profile mistakes over the last few weeks himself, with his displays coming under the microscope too.

However, Ancelotti believes that the criticism is just part and parcel of being a footballer.

"I think that criticism is part of our job. Alisson knows this, Pickford knows this, everyone knows this," the boss added.

"Who doesn't make mistakes? No-one. So we have to accept it sometimes, but you don't have to put in the discussion the quality of Alisson or Pickford."

Speaking about the game itself, Ancelotti knows his side can't only defend against Liverpool this weekend.

And the Everton manager confirmed his side have a plan to "propose something" in an attacking sense when they make their visit to Anfield.

"I think it's important to be focused on what we are going to do in the game, on the strategy of the game. To be brave, and to be confident," the Italian remarked.

"At the end, we are going to play football and Liverpool are going to do the same.

"I think, to play against Liverpool, you have to compete on their intensity levels they use in the game. You have to try and find solutions in front, you cannot only defend against them.

"You have to try and propose something and we are going to try and propose something tomorrow."
