Carl Yastrzemski’s grandson gets first MLB hit, immediately gets thrown out on bases

Mike Yastrzemski, the 28-year-old grandson of Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski, made his Major League debut on Saturday for the San Francisco Giants. Yastrzemski, who hit .316 with a 1.090 OPS at Triple-A Sacramento before his promotion, went 0-for-3 in that game but would not remain hitless for long.

In his first at-bat Sunday, Yastrzemski hit an opposite-field blooper that dropped in front of D-Backs left fielder Blake Swihart for his first Major League hit. But Yastrzemski strayed a little too far after rounding first base, and Swihart threw him out despite his wife’s best efforts to will him back to the bag:

Yastrzemski would also single in his next at-bat. He then doubled and scored in the seventh, so he had plenty of opportunity to feel what it’s like to be on base in a Major League game.

It feels worth noting that this author’s first-ever hit in his first ever teeball game ended almost the exact same way, and that this same author was thrown out on the basepaths three times in the same pickup baseball game Saturday — only one of which was not really his fault.
