Carl Frampton vs Tyler McCreary: Opportunity knocks for the Jackal following nightmare year

Nigel Travis believes fate could play into Carl Frampton's hands as the Belfast boxer targets world title glory once again.

The Jackal has endured a nightmare 12 months.

It started with a devastating defeat to Josh Warrington last December, and was punctuated by the freak injury that halted his comeback in August after a hotel ornament fell on his hand.

It would be easy to conclude the boxing gods are conspiring against Frampton , but experienced trainer Travis believes the setbacks of the past have now teed up new opportunities.

The two-weight world champion will return to the ring on Saturday night against unbeaten American Tyler McCreary.

Victory at The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas should guarantee another shot at a world title.

And while many have been quick to write off Frampton's chances of returning to the top step of boxing, Travis is in no doubt that glory beckons in the coming months.

"People think Carl is done, but I certainly don't and we as a team definitely don't. We have seen what he has been doing (in training)," Travis told iFLTV.

"It was a freak injury over in Philadelphia. We were over there to fight. Again, it is very hard at the time when you've spent a lot of money and time to get there, and it is gutting.

"But as they say, everything happens for a reason. Out of that has come another opportunity."

Travis - who helps train Frampton alongside Jamie Moore - added: "Before the Josh Warrington fight, genuinely nobody wanted to fight Carl Frampton.

"He was looking at Oscar Valdez. He was looking at Leo Santa Cruz. He was looking at those things but nobody would fight him.

"Then Josh Warrington beat him, which was a shock to me and to other people. I never expected it. I thought Carl would have too much, but Josh was fantastic.

"He sat there in the changing rooms crying and devastated, and is very hard to think what is the positive to come out of this.

"But after that everyone wanted to fight him. Opportunity knocks, and you have to grab it with both hands and see where it goes. That's where Carl is right now.

"He has an opportunity and I think he will go onto bigger and better things and will fight for a world title and become a world champion again."
