Carl Frampton vs Jamel Herring: Jackal explains story behind special fight shorts for April 3

It's a fight that will be played out behind closed doors, but Carl Frampton won't have far to look for support when he steps through the ropes in Dubai.

The Jackal is bidding to become a three-weight world champion when he takes on Jamel Herring on Saturday night, April 3.

Covid restrictions have prevented thousands of the Jackal Army travelling to the UAE. They will have to watch on from back home as Frampton goes to war with former US Marine Herring for the WBO world super-featherweight title at the The Rotunda at Caesars Palace, Bluewaters.

Despite their absence, Frampton will carry their support with him to the ring.

The 34-year-old has hundreds of fan messages printed on his fight shorts for the massive world title bout.

Some of the comments include "time to make history", "working class champion" and "win, lose or draw, you'll always be our hero".

Not that Frampton is planning on losing, or drawing.

"It was someone else's idea," Frampton told Belfast Live.

"They are just messages that supporters have said over the years. Things they've posted on social media. I think it is amazing some of the things people have said.

"We have got them printed onto the shorts very, very small, but there are hundreds of them. I think it is a nice idea, and when it was suggested to me I thought it would be good."

Frampton has built up a massive fan base over the years, packing out Belfast's SSE Arena and taking the Jackal Army to venues in Manchester, Texas, New York and Las Vegas.

"People just got behind me, and it is something I am really proud of," he added.

"I don't know why it happened. You would need to ask the fans. But I am very proud of the support I have, and grateful for it.

"And it is still building. They are all welcome."
