Carl Frampton vs Jamel Herring: Former opponent looking forward to 'retirement pint' with Jackal

Josh Warrington says he can't wait to go for a pint with Carl Frampton once both men have retired from boxing.

The pair shared the ring back in December 2018 in a brutal 12-round war played out in front of thousands of fans in Manchester.

Warrington retained his IBF featherweight crown that night with an impressive display against the Jackal, and the respect they shared from pre-fight has continued to this day.

Frampton is currently teetotal, with the 34-year-old having taken the decision to refrain from alcohol for as long as his career lasts.

But when they finally hang up the gloves for good, Warrington hopes the pair can raise a glass together.

"We have a bit of a bromance going on. There is a lot of respect shared between us, before and after our fight," Warrington told Kugan Cassius of iFL TV.

"And it stayed like that. It is weird, you stand and knock seven bells out of each other, and you gain a lot of respect there.

"You respect that man because you know what you're hitting him with, and you respect him because he is battling back. You're both competitive, but there's an inner respect which builds up.

"Listen, I would love to be able to go out for a pint with him when we both retire."

Leeds boxer Warrington recently suffered his first professional defeat when he was stopped by Mauricio Lara at Wembley Arena.

And he revealed Frampton was one of the first people to send him an encouraging text message in the aftermath of the knockout loss.

"Credit to him. After my last fight he sent me a message just telling me to keep my head up and remain positive. So I gave him a call and chatted to him over the phone," he added.

"Words of positivity and that, so fair play. What a guy he is."

And Warrington is backing his former opponent to become a three-weight world champion this weekend.

The Jackal takes on Jamel Herring in Dubai on Saturday night for the WBO world super-featherweight title.

"Most definitely. One because of the fighter he is, two because of the man he is, and three it would be fantastic for British boxing if he can go on and become a three-weight world champion," Warrington added.

"He's got a bit of a task ahead of him, in terms of the physical attributes. Herring is a tough man.

"Carl has got a boxing brain, so I feel that if Carl can get into a groove and can dictate the pace, then he can dictate the distance. And if he dictates that then it is his fight.

"I think Herring's advantage is his height, and it could become a bit of a chess match, so it could be who cracks first.

"He seems a bit of a fit kid as well does Herring, so if he comes and puts pressure on throughout the fight then it could be a tough night for Carl.

"But if it is a mediocre pace, then it is Carl's night and hopefully he can go and make a bit of history."
