Carl Frampton target Jamel Herring to defend world title on July 2

Carl Frampton target Jamel Herring is set to defend his WBO world super-featherweight title on July 2.

The American is in line to fight Puerto Rico's Jonathan Oquendo for the belt as part of a card being staged by Top Rank in in Las Vegas.

Talks are ongoing to finalise the bout, which is expected to be a tune-up ahead of a potential clash with Frampton.

The pair were originally scheduled to meet at Windsor Park on June 13 but that was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Now Herring is expected to defend his title against Oquendo this summer.

Héctor Soto of H2 Entertainment told Boxing Scene: "At Top Rank, we were told that they are ready to stage events without an audience.

"They offered us that opportunity for Jonathan and we are working on it."

Oquendo (31-6, 19 KO) is ranked eleventh in the WBO rankings, and was last seen in November last year when he beat Charles Huerta by unanimous decision.

“When we presented Jonathan with the opportunity, he immediately said yes. He is training for this opportunity,” added Soto.
