Carl Frampton retires from boxing after sixth-round defeat to Jamel Herring in Dubai

Carl Frampton has announced his retirement from boxing after his attempt to become a three-weight world champion ended in defeat to Jamel Herring.

The 34-year-old was stopped inside six rounds by the American in Saturday’s night’s featherweight title bout in Dubai.

The Northern Irishman’s corner threw in the towel as Frampton began to struggle after twice being knocked down by Herring.

Frampton was put down by the left hand of Herring in the fifth and sixth rounds. He scrambled back to his feet but the end came soon after.

As expected, Frampton confirmed his plan to retire following his defeat.

“I’m going to dedicate my life to my family now,” he told Channel 5. “Boxing has been good to me. It’s also been bad to me but the last few years have been the best years of my career.

“I just want to go home to my beautiful wife and kids and dedicate my life to them. That’s it.”

On the fight itself, Frampton said: “I just got beat by the better man. I really struggled to get inside him.

“He is sharp-shooting, from a distance, and had a perfect game plan. Zero excuses.”
