Carl Frampton open to fighting Jamel Herring for WBO super featherweight belt at Madison Square Garden

Carl Frampton is willing to give up home advantage to fight Jamel Herring at Madison Square Garden in New York City later this year.

Frampton, 33, is due to face Herring in November and will become Ireland’s first three-weight world champion if he can overcome the WBO super-featherweight belt holder.

The fight was originally planned for June 13 in Belfast before coronavirus struck and the fact shows are currently being held behind closed doors has altered Frampton’s thinking.

The Jackal was ringside for Anthony Joshua’s shock defeat to Andy Ruiz Jr at Madison Square Garden in June 2019 and has always dreamt of fighting there.

“Belfast was only appealing to me if it was going to be at Windsor Park,” he said.

“Are we going to be able to box in front of a crowd? Can we go to the United States? If it opens doors to spectators, we’ll probably do it there.

“I’d love to do it on the east coast in Madison Square Garden. I’ve done a few big arenas and that is one I have not ticked off yet.”

Frampton has fought in the States four times before, the last time when he beat Tyler McCreary at the Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas in November.

He beat Leo Santa Cruz at the Barclays Centre in Brooklyn in July 2016, before losing to the WBA super-featherweight champion at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas six months later.

The Belfast boxer fought for the first time in nine months when he beat Scot Darren Traynor in seven rounds in London at the weekend.

Herring has a warm-up bout on September 5 when he meets Jonathan Oquendo in Las Vegas.
