Carl Frampton has been promised his dream of becoming a three-weight world champ can still happen in his native Belfast.
Frampton wanted to face American WBO super-featherweight champ Jamel Herring at Windsor Park on June 13 and thought the fight might be re-arranged for New York in the autumn because of the coronavirus pandemic.
But Herring is still willing to come to Northern Ireland and Top Rank chief Bob Arum, who co-promotes Frampton with Frank Warren, claims the contest can take place at the city’s SSE Arena.
“Carl was pushing, before all of this happened, for the fight to be outdoors,” said Arum.
“Frank Warren, who would be promoting the fight, always wanted the indoor arena in Belfast.
“Once this clears up and we can go back to doing live fights, I would think we can still go to Belfast.
“They’ve got a really lovely indoor arena that seats 10,000 and that would be perfect for a fight like this.”
Frampton, 33, can make history against Herring and he would be the first Irish fighter to win world titles in three divisions.
The former super-bantamweight and featherweight king would be favourite against Herring with home advantage and the 34-year-old southpaw has only made one defence of his WBO belt.
Frampton's first world title came when he beat Kiko Martinez for the super-bantamweight before winning the super featherweight title against Leo Santa Cruz.
The Northern Irishman's last fight was a victory over Tyler McCreary in November last year.
