Carjacking gunman remains at large after evading police

Residents have been advised not to approach Stanley Turvey and report any sightings to police. (PR HANDOUT IMAGE PHOTO)

Additional police have been sent to northeast Victoria to track down a gunman who evaded officers and kidnapped a resident.

Stanley Turvey was told to drop his gun as police tried to arrest him at a property in Katandra West near Shepparton on Monday but he fired a shot into the air and fled in a vehicle.

A pursuit was initiated but the officers' car lost control and rolled on a country road, causing significant damage to its front.

The pair suffered minor injuries and have since been released from hospital.

Turvey stopped at a random home in the nearby town of Youanmite, where he forced a man to drive him to Finley across the NSW border.

The resident was then released uninjured, police said.

It's believed Turvey was travelling on Tuesday in a stolen white Toyota utility after he assaulted a woman and stole the vehicle at Yarrawonga about 10am.

The vehicle has a registration of 1RA-8AN.

"Any matter that involves or displays a firearm in order to secure goods or transport is a recipe for disaster and heartache," Superintendent Paul Henry told reporters.

Police believe Turvey has returned to the Shepparton area, with additional police deployed across northeast Victoria to track him down.

"He's clearly demonstrated that he is mobile," Supt Henry said.

"This is high victim impact-type offending. It must have been very traumatic for the individuals involved."

Police have called on Turvey to hand himself in for his and the public's safety.

An image of his tattooed face has been released as part of the public appeal to track him down.

But residents are advised not to approach Turvey if he is sighted and instead contact triple-zero immediately.
