Caring jogger who volunteers for the homeless slashed in face while on a run

A 'caring' man was slashed across the face while he was out jogging.

Spencer Reilly was on a run on Monday, December 9 when two men attacked him with knives and stole his head torch.

He was left with two shallow wounds down both sides of his face, Lincolnshire Live reported.

Spencer's step-daughter, Jen Surguy, said: "He came in the house shouting and when I looked over at him he was covered in blood.

"I'm first aid trained so I checked his tummy to see if he had been stabbed, which luckily he hadn't, and then started to clean his face.

"We went to hospital where the wounds were steri-stripped and the nurse confirmed it was probably a knife, especially given how easily it went through his clothes.

"I think we were so lucky it didn't get his eyes."

Jen said that people in the community had rallied around Spencer, who spends a lot of time volunteering for homeless people.

One kind resident gave him a new head torch.

"People in our area have been super supportive, offering their CCTV camera footage to help find the men who did this," she added.

"Spencer has done loads for the homeless in Wisbech and so everyone has been really supportive, offering well wishes, because he's such a nice and caring man.

"I'm so grateful for everyone being so kind.

"He's really shaken up so it's nice to know the community are rooting for a speedy recovery."

A spokesperson for  Cambridgeshire Police  said: "We were called at 6.07pm yesterday (9 December) to Meadowgate Lane,  Wisbech  with reports of a robbery.

"A man in his 40s was out for a run when he was approached by two men who stole his torch and then assaulted him.

"The two men then fled the scene on foot and the man was taken to hospital for treatment.

"Both men are described as white, aged in their early to mid-20s, of slim build and were wearing dark-coloured tracksuits at the time of the assault.

"An investigation has been launched and anyone with information should call police on 101 or visit   www.cambs.police.uk/report  , quoting crime reference number 35/87938/19."
