Carine Roitfeld: Get the French Vogue look

The hair
Every editor-in-chief needs a signature hairstyle. Roitfeld's is poker straight, glossy and honey-brown and falls to her shoulders in a centre parting. Yes, we know she looks a little like Iggy Pop but try not to focus on that. To emulate, ensure that you cover part of your face with hair to mysteriously peer out from in a sexy French way.

The makeup
It's all about 'le smoky eye' so invest in a good kohl eyeliner. The key to the individuality of this look lies in the strong, dark brows, which have to be perfectly groomed (this is not about the monobrow). A bit of fake tan will give you that glamorous jet-set Russian/French glow. Leave off the lipstick. The look you should be aiming for is smouldering and a lot like the Gucci girl of 10 years ago who was based exclusively on Roitfeld (she was Tom Ford's muse).

The handbag
There is no handbag, silly. She famously hates them, preferring to keep her hands in her pockets. She's far too important to carry things around like a courier. Not for her the lure of the It bag carried in the crook of her arm. At a pinch she might carry a tiny snakeskin clutch.

The jacket
Her preferred styles are edgy, tailored and chic with a strong biker/rock'n'roll element. She is always, but always, in black. Roitfeld likes to mix the masculine with the feminine and favours designers such as Balmain, Balenciaga and YSL, who excel at this. At the moment this means embracing the big-shoulder trend. Rid your mind of doubt, it's a huge trend (literally). Luckily, it will be all over the high street this autumn, everywhere from Topshop to M&S. If it's cold, throw a (faux) fur stole around your neck for added elegance.

The skirt
Jeans are 'for [her] assistants' and holidays, although she's not averse to a denim skirt, providing it tallies with her sharp-tailoring ethos. Think sexy body-con dresses and pencil skirts cut to the knee (repeat after me: classic and chic).

These form-fitting pieces emphasise her thin-as-a-pin body, so choose fabrics carefully if you have a fuller figure. This is not a woman who worries about having a muffin-top. For evening, she likes to rock an animal-print Balmain gown slashed to the thigh. Tres risqué!

The shoes
High, high, high heels. This is a woman who would never wear Uggs. Killer stilettos are by far the fashionistas most flattering and feminine choice. Her favourites include the YSL Tribute. Look for something with a hidden platform for added "comfort" and anything with straps, laces or buckles aka 'bondage light'.

The legs
Always bare. Even in winter. They must be tanned, lean and ready for action year-round. If this is not an option then black opaques are the only way to go.
