Caretaker of Dumfries' Crichton Hall on spending a year alone in the supposedly haunted property

For many people in Dumfries the idea of spending a night alone in Crichton Hall sounds like a nightmare.

But for Dave Harley that has been his life for the last year and he is not fussed about things that go bump in the night.

The 55-year-old is the caretaker at the site, which is haunted according to local legend and is soon to be transformed into a five-star hotel and spa.

He said: “It’s been nearly a year that I’ve been up here.

“I’ve heard the creaking and groaning late at night and had lights come on randomly but to be honest that stuff doesn’t bother me.”

Over the past 12 months Dave has been keeping the gardens in top condition and doing odd jobs ahead of the massive transformation.

In a way Dave, from Halifax, has been self-isolating before anyone had heard of the coronavirus.

He may be quite happy in his own company but he received a boost from local people who heard about his situation. A Facebook post appealing for items to keep Dave amused saw him inundated with books, DVDs and crossword books.

He said: “I’m quite happy up here on my own but that was very kind and unexpected. They brought me food too, which was really nice.

“People are very kind.”

Lisa Quinn, who posted the appeal on Facebook, said: “I asked Dumfries to donate DVDs to Dave.

“I cannot believe the generosity in such a short time. I’m proud of our town.”
