Carer threatened to stab an innocent member of the public as he robbed him of his wallet

A carer threatened to stab an innocent member of the public as he robbed him of his wallet.

Caelan Marriott also randomly attacked strangers in Hockley.

He was brought before Nottingham Crown Court for the shocking offences on Thursday, May 9.

A carer for his father, his trail of crimes happened in the early hours after he'd had too much to drink.

He was captured on CCTV delivering blows to innocent members of the public on October 20 last year.

Then he demanded a man's wallet and threatened to stab him if he did not hand it over.

As he was sentenced, Judge Rosalind Coe QC described the robbery as "a very unpleasant street robbery at night" and his victim "handed over his wallet because you threatened to stab him".

The judge ordered the 19-year-old, of Brindley Road, Wollaton, be subject to a six-month curfew, between 7pm and 6am, and complete 12 rehabilitation activity days and 200 hours of unpaid work. He will be subject to a two-year custodial sentence, suspended for two years.

Digby Johnson, representing him, said his father was diagnosed with cancer when he was 15 and he is now his registered carer and receives Carer's Allowance.

"He accepts that night he had a lot to drink," he said of Marriott, who had not produced a weapon during the robbery.

Marriott pleaded guilty to robbery and affray. He also admiitted assault, causing bodily harm, with 19-year-olds Troy Bukenya, of Byron Street, Hucknall, and Darnell Dolby-Brookes, of Sherbrooke Road, Carrington. The trio set upon a man also in the early hours of October 20.

Bukenya delivered one punch to the stomach area of the assault victim, followed by hits to the head by the other defendants, said Richard Purchase, mitigating on his behalf.

"He has expressed remorse for his actions," he told the judge.

Bukenya was sentenced for battery and the assault, receiving 29 weeks in custody, suspended for two years, 160 hours of unpaid work, and he must go on a course called the "thinking skills programme".

Dolby-Brookes, represented by Jennifer Wells, received a three-month custodial sentence, suspended for 18 months, 100 hours of unpaid work, and five rehabilitation activity days for his role in the assault.

Miss Wells said her client put his head in his hands on two occasions and "bent over in disbelief at what was going on around him".

"Just before he got involved he turned away to what was going on," she said. "He thought it was Marriott who was being pushed and that is why he got involved."

Since then he has watched the CCTV and "fully accepts that is not the case".
