Careers Talk: What next for social work?

Guest this week: High-profile cases and a recent Dispatches documentary have painted a depressing picture of working in social care and do little to relieve the strain on recruitment and retention problems in the sector. We talk about these issues, as well as the best aspects of the job, with Kim Bromley-Derry, executive director of Children & Young People's Services at the London Borough of Newham.

News review: Seasoned temp Harriet is pleased to see the projections that temp recruitment is set to rise, we ask why graduates flood already overcrowded sectors, and offer some advice to the one in five who plan to work in marketing, plus we wonder why the skills minister, John Hayes, is urging those affected by the recession to consider dance and flower arranging instead of gaining skills actually valued by employers outside of floristry.

We also mention some of the findings from the recently released UK Graduate Careers Survey 2010. Find the full report here.

Q&A review: Working in digital advertising — Allie White picks some of the best bits from our Q&A with an industry leading panel — including Saatchi and Saatchi.

Dear Julian: For those that side-stepped flower arranging and dance classes — perhaps you took a filler job instead to get you through the recession. If you're wondering about the impact taking a filler job during the recession could have on your job prospects, you're not alone. In our revamped feature, Dear Julian, our agony uncle has some wise words for you.

Post your workplace woes and burning questions in the comments section below or over in the Careers forum and Julian will address them in the podcast.

Also in the pod: Tighten your commuter belt and prepare yourself for a double-decker sized journey — we look at the life of an extreme commuter.

The jobs top 10: A research-themed chart includes a part-time director of research role at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism and research fellowships in climate change for the Institute of Development Studies.
