Careers Talk: What graduate job seekers want vs what employers need

Guests this week: Chasing job security during a recession? Pinning hopes on a role in the public sector when services and staff are being cut more deeply than ever before? These findings from new research by theTrendence Institute, for The Guardian UK 300, suggest that graduate ideals are still a little out of tune with reality. So Rob Briner, professor of organisational psychology at Birkbeck, University of London, returns to the podcast to talk about why is there often such a disconnect between what grads want and what employers need — and what we can do about it...

News review: We're thinking about emerging roles and jobs of the future in response to the news that Twitter consultant jobs are on the rise. Plus, with more than half of Generation Y workers getting itchy feet after a year in their job, and optimistic grads thinking their job hunt will only take between three and five months, we ask has Generation Y got its career time frames in a twist? And, what can we learn from the post-musical careers of pop stars?

Dear Julian: Anyone considering about a side-step at their current company? Creative director at Bauer, Julian Linley has some advice for, Mimanee, a grad career changer who wants to make a move internally.

Plus: Unpaid, exploited, erm, locked away in toilets...it's tough being an intern. We discovered this week that our colleague Kyra Choucroun faced some interesting challenges during her internship days. The analyst for the Guardian's Sustainable Business website reads us some extracts from her internship diary — and it's not always pretty...

You can find Kyra on Twitter — but whatever you do, don't phone her!

Jobs top 10: Our guest Rob Briner's work clearly made an impression as this week's jobs chart explores opportunities the psychology sector. Roles include a family assessment practitioner for the Anna Freud Centre and a forensic psychologist for the Criminal Justice Skills. To apply or to find more, go to jobs.guardian.co.uk.
