Careers Talk: How to improve your employability

Guests this week: We still can't get our heads around the news that recruiters are failing to fill all their vacancies due to a lack of graduate talent. Mainly because we know there's plenty of graduate talent out there and, more importantly, we know you want these jobs. So, we've invited Ruth Wilcock, who's a careers consultant at the Centre for Careers and Skills Development, City University London, to talk to us about how you can skill up and what steps you could take to improve your employability - in the short and long term.

News review: American economists claim beginning your career in sour economy may have lasting "scarring effects" — so we share some ideas for healing the wounds. Brace yourselves - we have a salary increases shocker; pay rises and bonuses are back for publishing staff, apparently. Plus, the most honest job advert ever and a lesson in application letter writing from Hunter S Thompson.

Dear Julian: The buzzing media hub of London can be hard for budding writers to resist but, before you leave your old life and job behind, you must have a plan as Julian Linley, creative director at Bauer, tells MrDenim

Plus: We take a mic along to Positive Change - a careers event for people looking to break into international development - and ask delegates what attracted them to such a massively competitive and oversubscribed sector - and why they feel they can make it.

Jobs top 10: This week's chart includes a science festival co-ordinator in Cheltenham, an office manager for the London Cycling Campaign and a digital producer at MTV. To apply or to find more, go to jobs.guardian.co.uk.
