Care home worker suspended over 'inappropriate relationship' with elderly lady

An investigation has been launched and suspended over claims he had an "inappropriate relationship" with an elderly resident.

Care watchdogs have been called in to probe an allegation the man - believed to have young children - conducted the relationship with a vulnerable elderly lady at Greencross home in Cambuslang.

A source told the Rutherglen Reformer: "It's all being kept very quiet.

“A male member of staff has been suspended over an alleged sexual relationship with a vulnerable female resident who is much older than him.

“She’s been telling people that they’re moving in together.

“The bosses are trying to keep it hushed up but I feel families with loved ones being cared for there deserve to know what’s been going on.”

Greencross has launched its own investigation and alerted appropriate authorities.

A spokesman said: "A male care assistant has been suspended while an investigation takes place into allegations of inappropriate behaviour.

“South Lanarkshire Council social work department and the Care Inspectorate are being kept fully informed.”

The (SSSC) is the regulator for the country’s social service workforce and is also looking into the incident.

A SSSC spokesperson said: “I can confirm the Scottish Social Services Council has received a fitness to practise referral and we are investigating.

“We cannot comment further while investigations are ongoing.”

The website of the Tabernacle Street facility, which is operated by Thistle Healthcare, states: “We have an uncompromising and consistent commitment to honour our integrity and moral, professional, spiritual and artistic values and principles.

“We focus on the needs of individuals and channel the emotion generated by their predicament into active responses.

“We take responsibility for our actions.”

Despite these ideals, care home bosses have yet to notify police of the alleged relationship, even though this is another recommended action following alleged incidents of this nature.

Our whistleblower also raised concerns over the treatment of the vulnerable woman.

The source added: “When she was asked about the relationship, the woman in question said her ‘boyfriend’ was going to get her out of the home and move in with her at the Glasgow property she owns.

“I fear she is being taken advantage of. He’s not her ‘boyfriend’, he’s got a partner and kids.

“People expect their loved ones to be looked after, not made a fool of.”

A spokesperson for the Care Inspectorate said: “Any allegation of this nature should be reported to the police and the local authority.

“We would expect to be notified by the service of an allegation of this nature.

“Everyone in Scotland has the right to safe, compassionate care which meets their needs and respects their rights.

“Anyone with a concern can contact us on 0345 6009527, and do so anonymously if they wish.

South Lanarkshire Council also confirmed it was aware of the situation.
