Care home residents with Covid more than double in fortnight - while hospital beds with coronavirus patients up by almost 200

The number of care home residents with Covid-19 has more than doubled in just two weeks, according to latest figures issued by Greater Manchester leaders.

The figure comes as the number of the region's hospital beds being filled by Covid-19 patients has shot up by almost 200 in the same time frame.

In a series of slides issued yesterday, January 13, Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham gave the latest Covid-19 update for the region.

The percentage of care home residents with confirmed Covid-19, or symptoms of the virus, has increased from 2.9 per cent, as of December 30, to 7.9 per cent, as of Thursday.

The figure tells that there are 'continuing challenges in care homes, reflecting increases in cases in the population as a whole', according to the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA).

Overall, Greater Manchester has recorded a slight dip in the seven-day rate of positive cases per 100,000 people, falling from 2,198 on January 1, to 2,070.6 on January 8.

"As we go forward these figures may be affected by the availability of tests and changing testing requirements, and as a result may underestimate current rates," said the GMCA.

The highest rates remain among the working age population, a heat map shows.

Weekly admissions to hospitals for Covid-19 have also seen a minor reduction, along with in-patient diagnoses.

However, the number of high dependency unit and intensive therapy unit beds with Covid-19 patients has risen from 54 to 65, as of January 10.

The number of beds, excluding those two wards, with Covid-19 patients has also risen - by almost 200 - from 1,020 on January 3 to 1,203, as of January 10.
