Care home residents in coronavirus lockdown play real-life Hungry Hippos game

Elderly residents of a care home have been playing real-life Hungry Hippos amid isolation due to the coronavirus oubtreak.

They have been filmed sitting in a circle while holding an upturned basket on the end of a pole - with a huge pile of colourful plastic balls in the middle of them.

Care home staff then wheel the residents forward and backwards as they try to catch as many plastic balls as possible under their baskets.

The balls are dispersed all over the room while residents and staff at the care home in Maesteg, Wales, laugh and have fun together.

Bryn Celyn Care Home said their residents "really enjoyed playing a new game" and there was a lot of "laughter to lift morale".

The video, which appeared on Facebook, attracted many social media reactions.

One person wrote: "Bless them, how cute."

Another commented: "Fantastic idea, well done to the team."

It comes as Britons have been advised to reduce social interaction and in particular be careful not to come into contact with people at risk, including those aged 70 or older, those with an underlying health condition or pregnant women.

Social distancing includes avoiding gatherings with friends and families - Britons are encouraged to keep in touch using technology such as phones, internet and social media.

The measures were put in place in a bid to limit the spread of Covid-19 in the UK.

As of today, 5,018 patients have tested positive for coronavirus - with 233 deaths confirmed.

Schools and other public venues such as bars, pubs, restaurants and cinemas have been closed as Britain battles the outbreak.
