Pensioners in an Essex care home were treated to their own version of I’m A Celebrity
The popular TV programme is a favourite of residents of Care UKs Mountfitchet House, Stansted Mountfitchet.
This year however, care workers decided to go one step further, by bringing bushtucker trials to the care home.
Creepy crawlies were brought in with the help of Eat Grub, a company which sells insects to eat.
Doreen Barber, 96, was one of the residents who took part, eating both crickets and grasshoppers.
She said: “We had so much fun taking part in the challenges – we are always up for trying something new, and we laughed non-stop the whole afternoon. The insects were rather dry, and maybe a bit too healthy for us.”
Residents were also treated to holding snakes, including a two-metre-long albino snake, and tarantulas which were brought to the home by external animal providers.
Whilst the food on offer divided opinion, the live animals proved a resounding success:
“I couldn’t believe how gentle and soft the snake was, and the tarantula was really beautiful too,” said Mrs Barber.
The popular reality TV programme is back on our screens, though this year has got of to a bumpy start.
Good Morning Britain host Richard Madeley was forced to leave after having medical assistance, and two camp members, Naughty Boy and Arlene Phillips, have also required medical treatment.
