Care home resident, 97, meets great-grandchild for first time in warming Covid reunion

An elderly care home resident was overwhelmed with joy as she finally met her great-granddaughter for the first time.

Margot Lawson met baby Cecilie behind a glass partition after her care home, CHD Living in Surbiton, London, allowed socially-distanced reunions with friends and family.

Until recently, Margot had been unable to receive visits from her family due to coronavirus restrictions.

However her care home has since announced that it is now able to welcome visitors.

Claire, Cecilie's mother, said: "Seeing my 97-year-old grandmother and eight-month-old daughter interacting together is something I had looked forward to for a very long time.

"I was so delighted to be able to properly introduce them to one another safely; the glass partition didn't take away from this moment filled with love and laughter which I will always cherish."

Margot said: "It was overwhelming - I was so surprised.

"I didn't even know Claire was visiting today, so that was a wonderful surprise in itself, and then I saw Cecilie on her arm and it was just marvellous. It's made my year."

The meet came as it was announced scientists are reportedly investigating whether a new mutant strain of Covid-19 is driving a surge in hospital admissions in Kent.

Non-urgent operations at hospitals in Kent have been postponed due to the rise in  coronavirus  patients being treated, the NHS confirmed on Friday.

However urgent services include cancer appointments would be unaffected, a spokesperson said.

Experts are assessing whether the new strain of coronavirus is to blame after its discovery was made public earlier this week.

The  i Paper reports  that scientific experts plan to work through Christmas to assess whether the new strain is more dangerous and virulent than the original, as they track around 1,000 cases in north east London and north Kent.
