Care home in Bristol gets one-star food hygiene score

A care home for the elderly was given a food hygiene score of one out of five during a recent inspection, with the lowest possible rating being zero.

The ABC Centre in Whitchurch was found to be in need of "major improvement" when it was inspected on February 2, according to Food Standards Agency records. The facility is run by Brunelcare, and provides homes for people who want to "continue to live independently but require some support", according to its website.

It has an on-site restaurant which provides lunch seven days a week to some of its residents. The ABC Centre was given the rating based on its performance in the category of management of food safety, which was found to be in need of "major improvement".

This category is judged on the systems or checks in place to ensure that food sold or served is safe to eat, the evidence that staff know about food safety, and whether the inspector has confidence that standards will be maintained in future. The centre was found to have "good" cleanliness and condition of facilities, while its hygienic food handling was judged as "generally satisfactory". However, the overall finding was that the facility's food hygiene needed "major improvement".

A spokesperson for the ABC Centre said: "We are disappointed to be awarded a one for our food hygiene rating at the ABC Centre and have taken the necessary steps to upgrade this rating. We pride ourselves on providing our residents with good quality food and the cleanliness and condition of the facilities at our centre - this inspection by the local authority rated these good."
