Care home hit with Covid outbreak despite every resident being fully vaccinated

A care home where almost everyone has been given two doses of the vaccine has been hit with an outbreak of Covid.

Kenwyn Care Home in Truro, Cornwall, has closed to visitors after an unspecified number of positive tests among staff and residents.

100 per cent of residents and 94 per cent of workers have been given two jabs.

Luckily all the cases so far have been asymptomatic, according to a spokesperson for the nursing home.

The home has not disclosed how many people are infected but an anonymous source told CornwallLive that the cases were among both staff and residents.

The care home’s spokesperson added: “We can confirm that we have had individuals tested positive with Covid-19 at Kenwyn Care Home.

“We respect the privacy of our residents and staff in all matters and would like to reassure residents and families that we are continuing to do everything we can to keep our residents and staff safe and well.

“The general manager and her team are working closely with the CCG ( NHS Kernow Clinical Commissioning Group), Public Health England and infection control teams, all of whom are happy with the procedures in place at the home.

“As a precautionary measure the home is currently not receiving visitors or new residents as per public health guidelines.

“These positive cases coincide with a rise in cases across the county which is being managed by Cornwall Council's public health department.”

It comes as coronavirus cases surge across Cornwall in the aftermath of the G7 summit, amid claims it was a “super-spreader event”.

Infection rates in some areas of the county rocketed by up to 2,450%.

Data showed the rate of Covid-19 infections in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly on the Sunday before the G7 began was 2.8 per 100,000.

During the week to, and including, June 14 they leapt to 81.7 per 100,000.

Cases across the country have also been rising despite the continued vaccine rollout that saw bookings top a million in two days as newly eligible young people signed up.

Data from last week found that infections in England doubled between 3 May and 7 June.
