Care home could be built on land next to Partington Shopping Centre

Supported living accommodation for the elderly could soon be built on an old car park next to a shopping centre.

Trafford Council has identified the land next to Partington Shopping Centre as a potential site for new homes for the older generation and said it has long had plans to develop the land for housing.

No proposals have been tabled yet and the authority has been clear with residents that it will consult the public on any plans that are presented in future.

Coun Adele New, who represents Partington, said there was "a disclosure of a care home being built imminently on the old car park at the shopping centre" at a public meeting last week.

But Coun New also emphasised the fact that no specific plans have been put forward yet.

The council bought the site next to the shopping centre back in 2016 using money from Homes England; a government fund that supports affordable housing projects.

The land is mostly brownfield, meaning it has been used before, but some has not been previously developed.

A spokesperson for the authority said it had always intended to develop the site for housing.

They said: “The site was formerly part of the shopping centre and is a mostly brownfield site in a sustainable location.

"The council also has a need for more supported housing for older people, and this site was identified as a potential option.

"At the moment there are no specific proposals or plans and the council is considering the feasibility of a scheme on this site.

"The council will fully consult with the local community in advance of taking any proposals forward, which will also be subject to planning approval in the usual way.”
