Cards Against Humanity, the irreverent card game company, bought ClickHole on Monday from G/O Media for an undisclosed price.
The all-cash deal separates ClickHole, a six-year-old parody of clickbait websites filled with purposefully inane listicles and quizzes, from humor website The Onion, which created it. The sale was first reported by BuzzFeed _ one of the websites ClickHole set out to satirize.
"It was a business decision," G/O Media spokesman Matt Goodman said Tuesday.
G/O Media, formerly Gizmodo Media Group, is an assemblage of popular websites that also includes The A.V. Club, Jalopnik, Jezebel and The Root.
ClickHole was launched in 2014 as an offshoot of The Onion, under previous owners. Spanish language broadcaster Univision bought The Onion websites in 2016. Boston-based private equity firm Great Hill Partners bought the digital media portfolio, which had been combined with the remnants of Gawker Media, for an undisclosed price in April.
Founded with a Kickstarter campaign in 2010, Cards Against Humanity has carved out its own niche with a popular party game known for politically incorrect cutting-edge humor.
